They were dog-slow with the 3.2L, the 3.6 only made it a tiny bit better. Both engines get horrible gas mileage, so you may as well get the one with more competent acceleration.
This is my first 3.0 TDI and it is a sweet motor. It really moves my big fat A8L so it would do even better in a much lighter car like the A5. I have a 2008 VW MKV GTI with the 2.0 TFSI motor (same as Audi). Bought it new in 2008, modded from stage 1 -> stage 2 -> stage 3 (from K03 to K04 turbo 335whp) -> Big turbo and built engine at 480whp.
